In ancient times

In ancient times, during spring floods, the area around Belovezhskaya Pushcha turned into a huge sea, above which, like an island, a forest stood, where animals escaped from the flood. The richness of the animal world, the abundance of animals and silicon, as well as the presence of a waterway from the Baltic to the Black Sea, attracted hunters here and created good conditions for people to live.

Birds
The ornithofauna of Belovezhskaya Pushcha is exceptionally rich and diverse. More than 250 species of birds out of 310 detected in the whole territory of Belarus inhabit here. This is more than in any other national park of our country or in Poland. 186 species nest there.
Mushrooms of Belovezhskaya Pushcha
The many-faced world of mushrooms of Belovezhskaya Pushcha is not yet sufficiently studied. About 600 species vegetation of various mushrooms is explored in the Belarusian part, among which the majority are agaric and tree-destroying species. More than 60 species of Erysiphales, which cause plant diseases have been identified.
Flora
Regarding to flora Belovezhskaya Pushcha is a unique region, where the Eurasian coniferous forest zone closely approaches the European broad-leaved one, and the taiga gives way to nemoral forests. Geographical location, climatic and soil-hydrological conditions determined the richness and diversity of the flora.
Bison of Belovezhskaya Pushcha
The forest preservation was contributed by the fact that the bison has survived in it, which extinction and the desire to preserve this species in Europe encouraged Lithuanian princes at first, then Polish kings, and later Russian tsars to protect this forest earnestly from the destructive activities of man.
Fauna
The animal world of Belovezhskaya Pushcha is rich and diverse. It could be even richer, but some species were exterminated by man in the recent historical past. Thus, the aurochs was exterminated in the XVII century, the wolverine and marble polecat disappeared, in the XVIII – the beaver, red deer, tarpan, in the XIX - the bear, wild cat, flying squirrel, in the beginning of the 20th century - the bison.
